Plans by the Department of Homeland Security and the Central Intelligence Agency to delete thousands of “insignificant” records have information activists up in arms. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) had proposed deleting government records that lack “administrative, legal, research, or other value.” This would include records from the Department of Defense and Department of Justice, the CIA and DHS, including the Transportation Security Administration. Some of the DHS records include files on the Einstein 3 network monitoring system which contains a wealth of information, including metadata such as email and IP addresses.
